The 2015-18 Subaru WRX is one heck of a car, once again delivering on Subaru’s winning recipe for all-wheel-drive fun. As with every Subaru of the last 20 years or so, enthusiasts are feverishly modding 15+ Subaru WRX’s.

In their zeal to throw parts at it as quickly as possible, the FA20DIT engine has developed a reputation for being notoriously finicky among Subie lovers. In particular, the issue is that many aftermarket intakes cause a Check Engine Light or worse, resulting in quite a few ‘horror stories’. All the ‘horror stories’ have created the impression the motor will blow up if you look at it wrong. While that’s a wild exaggeration, there is some truth to the fact it’s fairly easy to hurt these motors.

Longevity with a performance car like the WRX can be a concern, so that’s why we wanted to take this opportunity to do a Long Term Review of the performance of our Hi-Flow Intake for 2015-2018 Subaru WRX to see how it really held up in the real world.

Subaru WRX 2015 Intake Installed View 1

STILLEN manager Dean has been running the STILLEN Hi-Flow Intake for 2015-2018 Subaru WRX on his daily driver WRX for the past two years – without issue. As you may or may not know, the STILLEN WRX intake doesn’t require a tune to make the power advertised or to avoid a CEL.

intake_final1

Dean’s WRX runs a basic COBB AccessPORT for tuning and datalogging, a KILLER-B Intercooler, as well as the prototype STILLEN Exhaust for 2015-18 Subaru WRX (currently in development), and that’s about it.

Dean’s WRX is not ‘wildly modded’ by any means, and it’s worth saying Dean doesn’t drive like your grandma – he also enjoys spirited driving in the Rex. After 2 years of normal commuting and typical maintenance, Dean’s WRX is still running great – no check engine lights, and the motor has not exploded. Furthermore, it still makes every bit of the power it did 2 years ago.

Given the FA20DIT’s ‘reputation’, that’s remarkable. The OEM airbox is rather restrictive and could really be in virtually every regard, airflow, sound – which is part of why our intake was able to safely achieve 30WHP gains.

This really highlights the value of the work we put into developing our performance parts here at STILLEN. When we were designing the STILLEN Hi Flow Intake for 2015-18 Subaru WRX, we wanted to create an intake that delivered power safely and would work well with the OEM ECU.

IMG_9076

Dean tells us that around town, the intake sound remains fairly subtle until you tip in the throttle, offering an intoxicating and rich boxer four intake note, yet is still quiet enough to have a conversation with passengers. Given the power gain, longevity and sound level of this intake, this intake is a great option for any commuter WRX or any WRX enthusiast chasing horsepower.

That’s another quality we strive for in our performance parts- we aim to offer subtle, refined tones in our intakes and exhausts that sound GOOD, avoiding obnoxious drone and unnecessary noise that can take away from enjoying a car.

After dozens of prototypes, we settled on a shielded design that retains the factory air duct – the end result being a walloping 30whp / 32wtq peak gain. That’s one of the perks of doing all of our manufacturing in house – since every STILLEN intake is manufactured right here in Costa Mesa, CA, we’re able to produce and test numerous prototypes to fine tune diameter and design for safe, reliable, consistent power.

Stillen 2015 WRX 1v5

We wanted more than just “peak numbers” with this system – by carefully tweaking the airflow, we were able to make a huge dent in that infamous FA20/FA20DIT “torque dip” between 4300-5500 RPM that normally takes the fun out of things, offering a huge improvement in usable power across the entire rev range.

Considering that our intake delivers huge power, nearly eliminates the infamous torque dip and won’t cause a CEL, we’re not just blowing hot air when we say the STILLEN 2015-18 Subaru WRX Cold Air Intake is quite possibly the best intake for FA20DIT WRX models. The only question left is – why don’t you have one yet on your ‘rex?

Here at STILLEN, we’re pretty proud of the products we make. We know firsthand how much time and effort goes into sourcing the correct materials, developing the perfect design and testing the prototypes all so that we are 100% confident that the aftermarket parts our customers are putting into their cars are the best they possibly could be. We tested our brake cooling ducts for Nissan 370Z on a real race track and verified everything worked with cold, hard data – but of course, the standard for any experiment is that someone else should be able to repeat your experiment and get the same result – so of course, we were happy to give our friends at MotoIQ the chance to test our brake cooling ducts for themselves.

As proud as we are of the parts we make, we are even more proud when a third party recognizes a STILLEN part for its quality. Needless to say, the office was abuzz this week when we found out how well the STILLEN brake cooling kit for the Nissan 370Z did in MotoIQ’s Project 370Z Brake Cooling Duct Review article!

Project 370Z Article Summary

As the article mentions, the goal of Project 370Z is to get some track time with their 370Z. As improvements to the car have led to improved lap times, they have also led to more stress on the brakes. With this in mind, the team decided it was time to upgrade with the STILLEN 370Z brake cooling kit. With that decision made, it was time to actually install the kit and test it. By this time, most of the STILLEN team was on the edge of their seat wanting to hear how our in-house testing was comparing to MotoIQ’s third party testing. Checkout the quote below to see how our brake cooling kit fared:

“With the brake ducts covered, the right front caliper temperature peaked at 272 degrees Fahrenheit, and the rotor at 529 degrees Fahrenheit. The Left front caliper reached 259 degrees, with the rotor at 550 degrees. Once the ducts were opened, both the left and right side caliper dropped 44 degrees. The right front rotor dropped 156 degrees, and the left front rotor dropped a whopping 216 degrees! This is a significant reduction and spot on with STILLEN’s in house testing at the same track. We were truly impressed with the numbers.

Also, the brake feel and control stayed more consistent throughout the session with the ducts functioning. Any 370Z that sees a decent amount of track time should look into purchasing this kit, it’s a cost effective way to give yourself a higher temperature threshold for your brake system and also prolong the life of the wear items, such as pads, rotors, piston seals, and brake fluid.– Clint Boisdeau, MotoIQ

STILLEN VQ35HR 350Z & G35 Supercharger Now Available

STILLEN 07-09 NISSAN 350Z SUPERCHARGED SATIN (4)

STILLEN is proud to announce the availability of the 2007-2008 350Z supercharger kit for the dual throttle body VQ35HR powered Nissan 350Z.

350zsupercharger_0006

This STILLEN supercharger system took over a year to develop and involves revolutionary designs to offer customers easy upgradability and installation.

STILLEN Nissan 350 HR STILLEN SUPERCHARGED (10)

With this supercharger system, power for the 350Z and G35 is boosted to 450 horsepower at the crank (or 360-375whp), and this system won’t give you a hard time when you need to smog, because these kits are CARB Exempt. Thanks to that CARB Exempt EO#, this means when smog – or inspection – rolls around, your car is 100% emissions legal. Since California is the strictest state in the union when it comes to emissions, if it passes CA standards, it probably will pass your local regulations. (Be sure to check your local laws to ensure you’re compliant anyways)

STILLEN_Black_Supercharger_Studio-1

Air to water intercooler: By redesigning the intake manifold we were able to incorporate the intercooler inside the manifold, thus allowing us to cool the air charge immediately before the air enters the engine.

STILLEN_Black_Supercharger_Studio-2

On the dual throttle body VQ35HR engines found in 2008-09 Nissan 350Z and 2008-09 Infiniti G35, power is slightly lower than the VQ37HR, due to the engine being smaller and the fact that VQ37HR has VVEL whereas the VQ35HR does not. Power output is typically around 450 horsepower to the crank (stock is 300hp to the crank), which ends up working out to around 360whp, in most cases.

Additionally, the front mounted heat exchanger does not block the airflow supplying cool air to other vital coolers such as the radiator, engine oil cooler, transmission cooler, power steering cooler or the A/C condenser.

STILLEN Nissan 350 HR STILLEN SUPERCHARGED (11)

Because water is 4 times more efficient at dissipating heat than air, we are able to utilize a more compact heat exchanger to cool the water.

Since the early days when we offered STILLEN-modified 25th Anniversary Edition Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo models through new car dealerships in the 90s, STILLEN has had a long history of offering our quality parts in new car showrooms. That’s still true today as STILLEN proudly offers our products through new car dealerships around the country.  This relationship builds a great foundation for our customers, offering them a trusted local source who will install and service their performance parts and gives enthusiasts the peace of mind that they are protected by the factory, dealership and/or STILLEN warranty.

Holman Infiniti in Maple Shade, New Jersey recently upgraded one of their showroom model 2017 pure white Q50S luxury sedans with the full suite of STILLEN body styling components.

Kevin Shaw (Parts Manager at Holman Infiniti) had this to say,

“For this go around we started with a new for 2017 color Pure White Q50S. With that base I added an Infiniti Midnight Black Grille accompanied by the STILLEN Sport Front Bumper Splitter for 2014-2017 Infiniti Q50 V37 (KB11225) finished in Matte Black. The side profile of the car was followed up with the STILLEN Rocker Panel Side Skirt Extensions for 2014-2017 Infiniti Q50 V37 (KB11228MB) in Matte Black. Then to finish the aggressive look I added a STILLEN Rear Valance Diffuser for 2014-2017 Infiniti Q50 V37 (KB11222MB) finished in Matte Black, an Infiniti Sport Exhaust with the no muffler option and Infiniti rear mudguards the we had wrapped in Matte Black vinyl by a local shop. Overall, the car looks absolutely stunning on our showroom floor and I could not be happier with it. Probably my favorite one so far! “

The team at Holman Infiniti has done a great job on this build and we look forward to seeing what they come up with on their future cars!  Make sure to stop by and check out the car for yourself and see what kind of great deal they can offer you on this amazing car!

STILLEN Event Tracking: Nitto Auto Enthusiast Day 2017 3R1A2025

The car show scene has exploded in recent years, with car events happening across the country and around the world throughout the spring, summer and fall. There is almost nary a weekend during the summer months that doesn’t have some sort of an event happening somewhere. Unfortunately, the shows become a blur when local events feature the same cars every weekend. This is where the Nitto Auto Enthusiast Day presented by Drivingline stands out from the rest.

Held on August 12, 2017 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, the Fifth Annual Auto Enthusiast Day takes the common car show to the next level. This entirely free event (to both attendees and vendors) featured acres of asphalt with over 130 vendor displays of all types, 1,000 show vehicles and seven demo vehicles, including special drift and off-road machines, smoking their tires throughout the day. Sound like overkill? Perhaps, but it was the right size to entertain and intrigue the more than 23,000 people that came through the gates.

GTR_brake_cooling_kit_fullsize s

After months of testing and road racing, STILLEN is proud to announce the availability of the first Active Brake Cooling Package made specifically for the R35 Nissan GT-R.

This kit has been shown to reduce rotor temperature on the AP Racing Carbon Ceramic Brake Upgrade by over 200 degrees F, and is also extremely effective for those running standard OEM Iron, or the AP Racing Curved Vane Rotor Upgrades. STILLEN is proud to offer an active brake cooling option for R35 GT-R owners looking to improve track times and lower brake temperatures. These kits are for use with both traditional iron rotors, as well as the STILLEN Carbon Ceramic Matrix Brake Kit.

During the development of the STILLEN GT R Targa rally car Team STILLEN worked very closely with the engineers at AP Racing to develop the first aftermarket Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit in the world. One of the key components of that kit was brake cooling. Carbon Ceramic Brakes have an ideal operating temperature range where they perform at their best. Carbon Ceramic Brakes work well when cold however their true performance shines through during repeated hard, high temperature braking. However, there is a temperature threshold which should not be exceeded. During the development of the kit the engineers at AP Racing asked what we would be doing for brake cooling. We were open to all input from AP and their instructions were to use external fans directing air to the rotors and calipers. They said regardless how hot the air is coming off the engine, it’s a lot cooler than the heat coming off the rotors.

To test the performance of the STILLEN Active Brake Cooling Kit, we went to El Toro Air Force Base with temperature sensors on each rotor and caliper. We performed the tests with the active cooling on one side of the car, and not the other. We performed a series of 140-0 runs as well as laps around our test track. We also put temperature sensor stickers on each caliper that act just like temperature paint for the rotor. As the temperature of the caliper increases it burns off parts of the sticker so we know how hot the caliper is running. After all of the data was collected and analyzed we determined that with this brake cooling kit we successfully reduced rotor temperatures by over 200 degrees.

The STILLEN brake cooling kit is offered as a separate front and rear kit.

GT-R Front Active Brake Cooling System
GTR308395 STILLEN GT-R FRONT BRAKE COOLING KIT 1

The front brake cooling kit consists of a weather resistant electric fan, mounting brackets, wiring kit and switch, and poly-urethane air diversion splitter.

GT-R Rear Brake Cooling System

The rear cooling kit utilizes polyurethane air scoops which work in conjunction with the factory NACA ducts in the belly pan to route air to the braking system, and also features polyurethane air funnels, accordion tube and all necessary mounting bracketry.

It’s important to note that during our testing we also found that with the VDC off, the rear brake cooling isn’t 100% necessary. Because brakes work better with a bit of heat in them, we prefer to leave the rear brake cooling kit off of the car when Steve Millen drives, because he does not utilize the VDC control system. If you are like 99% of the owner’s of GT-R’s and are not in fact, a professional racing driver, you more than likely utilize the VDC function and therefore, we would suggest the rear brake cooling system.

These kits, while developed to aid in the necessary cooling for the Carbon Ceramic Brake setup, this kit is also extremely effective in lowering caliper/rotor temperatures for both stock iron rotor setups, as well as the AP Racing iron rotor upgrades.

Dealership Profile: Melloy Nissan x Rough Country Titan Lift Kit

Rough Country 6in Lift + N-Fab Cab Length Step Bars (Black)

As any enthusiast knows, people gravitate toward vehicles that stand out, and aftermarket products can personalize a vehicle to stand out from the unmodified masses. For some buyers, these upgrades could very well influence their purchasing decisions, especially when the upgrades are available installed at the dealership.

That’s why many dealerships choose to offer customized and modified vehicles as part of their new car stock, giving them that ‘extra something’ to draw the attention of potential buyers.

Melloy Nissan of Albuquerque, New Mexico understands this quite well, and having an already-customized vehicle on the showroom floor gives customers something tangible to look at instead of having to imagine the vehicle ‘as it could be’. One of the most popular upgrades for Titan fans is the Rough Country 6″ Lift Kit for 2017 Nissan Titan [H61] 4WD (87820), which is why offering new Nissan Titans with this kit already installed is an especially enticing prospect for new truck shoppers.

Nissan-16-Titan_XD_N-Fab_Black_Step_Bars_img2

Rough Country 6in Lift + N-Fab Cab Length Step Bars (Black) + Rough Country Pocket Flares + Rough Country Black Series LED Light Bar

Offering Nissan Titans with Rough Country lifts installed has proven so popular, it’s almost hard to keep up with the demand, according to the Parts Manager Jorge Nanez, who had this to say:

“As soon as the sales department gets another batch of Nissan Titans in inventory, they immediately send a couple of them over to the shop to be modified. Displaying upgraded vehicles always gets buyers’ attention. Even if customers do not jump at the chance to buy the showroom model, they are inspired to modify their new vehicle in the same way but in their own choice of color and trim package. We have sold over 15 Rough Country to customers since they became available, and that does not even include the demo models that sell off the showroom floor! We are preparing six more demo vehicles, each being set up with a Rough Country 6″ Lift Kit for 2017 Nissan Titan [H61] 4WD (87820)Rough Country Pocket Fender Flares for 2017 Nissan Titan [H61] 4WD (87820), and Rough Country Black Series LED Light Bar for 2017 Nissan Titan [H61] 4WD (87820). The New Mexico state fair is coming soon and our plan is to display our modified Titans at the fair!”

As with any turbocharged engine, the easier that the turbo can breathe, the more efficiently it will operate and the greater the potential output. Unfortunately, most factory exhaust systems are built conservatively to keep sound levels and cost down. This is also a common bottleneck for performance.

Exhaust manufacturer Magnaflow prides itself for being at the forefront of development, especially when it comes to supporting new vehicle models and platforms. Magnaflow’s latest development is the first cat-back exhaust system to market for the new Civic Type R FK8.

Top Exhaust: Magnaflow Exhaust 2017 Honda Civic Type R 19383

The new Magnaflow Cat-back Exhaust for 2017 Civic Type R [FK8] (19383) is the latest addition to the Competition Series of exhausts. This exhaust features mandrel bent, 2.5-inch 409 stainless steel tubing with V-band clamp connections. A straight through pipe (included with this exhaust system) can be easily swapped with the resonated presilencer for a more aggressive exhaust note. The exhaust terminates into a triple muffler configuration finished with carbon fiber tips. Magnaflow states that this exhaust lends to a more aggressive exhaust note while reducing overall system mass, shedding unwanted, excessive weight. Like all Magnaflow exhausts, the new Civic Type R Cat-back Exhaust features Magnaflow’s limited lifetime warranty.

Magnaflow is first to market with this exhaust for the new Civic Type R FK8… Be among the first on the streets with it! STILLEN is taking preorders on this exciting new exhaust, place your preorder today!

Infiniti Melbourne x STILLEN Q60 Red Sport 20170715_145747

The twin-turbocharged Infiniti Q60 Red Sport has been gaining traction with the aftermarket as development progresses on this exciting new luxury coupe. This is evident to us here at STILLEN, as we get feedback from our vast network of partner dealerships. One such dealership, Infiniti of Melbourne in Melbourne, Florida, has seen an increase in the sales of the Q60 as its popularity surges, and reached out to us to collaborate to create this Melbourne x STILLEN Infiniti Q60 Red Sport.

STILLEN Unpainted Front Bumper Splitter for 2017 Infiniti Q60 [V36]

Every enthusiast knows, a car that stands out from the crowd is the car that’s going to capture your attention. When you think about why we modify our vehicles, one of the biggest reasons we do it is to look good. Melbourne Infiniti is well aware of this, and so fitting one of the Q60’s in their showroom with STILLEN Unpainted Front Bumper Splitter for 2017 Infiniti Q60 [V36] was a no-brainer.

Body Styling and Lowering are on the Rise

It’s an unspoken rule among auto enthusiasts that every car looks better with a set of gorgeous wheels and lowered suspension. Therefore, it’s not surprising that with this rise in sales, there is a corresponding increase in aftermarket upgrades purchased. To give this car that oh-so-desirable lowered stance, a set of RS-R Lowering Springs for 2009+ Infiniti Q60 were fitted, offering a 1.2in drop up front and a 1.0in drop at the rear for a sleek yet understated look. A slick set of semigloss black Vossen Wheels completes the aesthetic.

We spoke to Infiniti of Melbourne’s Parts Department manager, Luke Degraff, who shared some of his observations.

“The increased sales of the Q60 coupe, along with its sedan sibling, the Q50, have led to an increase in aftermarket parts sales, especially the STILLEN Unpainted Front Bumper Splitter for 2017 Infiniti Q60 [V36] and the STILLEN Rear Valance Diffuser for 2014-2017 Infiniti Q50 [V36]. A good number of customers have also chosen to lower their new Q50 or Q60 with a set of RS-R Lowering Springs for 2009+ Infiniti Q60 [V36] RWD (N120D). We chose Vossen Wheels to complete the showroom model. The presentation has been very well received!”

The STILLEN equipped Q60 was a hit at Infiniti of Melbourne’s Cars and Coffee event this past Saturday, July 22.

Infiniti of Melbourne also regularly hosts a Cars and Coffee event at the dealership. During their July 2017 event, the STILLEN/RS-R/Vossen equipped Q60 certainly drew plenty of attention from visitors checking out the vehicles on display.
